Introduction to British Expat Insurance
British Expatriate Insurance is important for any British Citizen traveling or living outside the U.K.
British citizens are covered by the NHS (National Health Insurance System) while they are in the U.K.; therefore, the majority of people in the U.K. do not have private health insurance as NHS takes care of the majority of their medical needs. British expats also receive coverage in many parts of Europe while living outside the U.K.
However, when British expats are traveling or living outside of that area, NHS does not provide health cover. Therefore, it would be wise to buy an appropriate travel or health insurance plan for British expatriates.
Travel Medical Insurance
If you are a British expat traveling for a short duration (which can actually be from 5 days to 3 years), it would be in your best interest to purchase a short term travel medical insurance policy that would provide coverage for eligible medical expenses and other travel related benefits such as emergency medical evacuation, repatriation of remains and loss of checked luggage.
You can purchase travel health insurance online. It is available to anyone traveling internationally outside the U.S. It is NOT limited to the U.S. citizens traveling abroad. You can even purchase after departing from your home country.
Whether you are traveling from Australia to Fiji or traveling from Germany to Canada or anywhere else in the world, these insurance plans are available.
However, If you are traveling to the U.S., you may want to consider visitors insurance instead.

New Immigrants to USA
New immigrants to the US are expected to have PPACA compliant health insurance (Obamacare). However, if you are not eligible for any of these reasons:
- have not been a resident of the U.S. for a certain duration
- don't have a social security number
- don't qualify outside the open enrollment period
- you are not eligible for Medicare or other domestic insurance
You should consider purchasing new immigrant insurance until you are eligible to enroll into long term domestic health insurance.
Expatriate Health Insurance
If you are going to stay overseas for one year or longer, and you expect to stay outside the U.S. at least 6 months out of the year, you should purchase a long term, annually renewable major medical plan, popularly known as expatriate health insurance.
